Needlework Atelier Stacked opened on the Oudegracht to give adult stitchers a room that feels more like a reading library than a craft fair. The name nods to how embroidery accumulates: one layer of colour, then another, until the cloth holds depth. Our founder trained in classical hand embroidery and spent years finishing textile pieces for private clients before teaching small groups in Utrecht.
We work with adults only — beginners welcome, experienced stitchers encouraged. Sessions stay small so guidance can stay specific: tension, colour order, how to rest the wrist. Open studio hours let members continue projects between formal classes. The shelves hold cotton and silk floss, linen grounds, and copper-toned tools we trust enough to recommend.
What we believe
Good needlework is honest about time. A botanical spray may take weeks; a monogram may take an evening. We refuse kits that promise mastery in an hour. Instead we teach stitches you can carry into any cloth, and we keep the studio quiet enough for concentration. Music is soft; phones stay in bags unless you are photographing your progress.
Community matters without becoming loud. Students share tips over tea, leave notes in the project cupboard, and sometimes return years later with a finished heirloom. Commissions are accepted when the calendar allows; finishing and framing keep completed work safe for Dutch homes with canal humidity in mind.
